2014 NFL Mock Draft v 2.0

Well holy crap. I was able to complete an NBA and NFL Mock Draft in the same week!

Based on the "if the season ended today" draft order.

-----
1. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-8)
QB Marcus Mariota, So, Oregon
6'4, 211 lbs
Hometown: Honolulu, HI
2013 Stats: 144-225, 2281 yards, 20 TD, 0 INT
511 rushing yards, 9 TD

The Josh Freeman era has come to a crashing thud in Tampa Bay, , and Greg Schiano might soon follow him out the door. I think Schiano's demanding ways played a part in Freeman's regression. His style just does not often work in the NFL. Mike Glennon has shown some nice flashes but I do not think the Buccaneers would pass on a premium prospect at the top of the first round. With this draft potentially loaded with signal callers, now is the time to find a new face of the franchise. I wanted to leave Mariota and Brett Hundley (Hundley is not in this mock. He is very talented but I think he needs another year of seasoning) off this mock, because both are just redshirt sophomores and will battle to be the first overall pick in 2015. But Mariota has simply played too well to ignore, and will be in my mock for now on. The quarterback position has evolved in the NFL, and Mariota looks like he has the best of both worlds. He is a strong, quick runner but also has a cannon for an arm. His numbers are not simply a product of Oregon's explosive offense. Mariota would be a bit of a project, and some scouts might shy away from him since he is only a redshirt sophomore. I think that would be a mistake, however. Teddy Bridgewater and Marcus Mariota are two different types of quarterbacks, and Tampa Bay would have to decide how they want to build their offense.

-----

 2. Jacksonville Jaguars (0-8)
QB Teddy Bridgewater, Jr, Louisville
6'3, 196 lbs
Hometown: Miami, FL
2013 Stats: 179-243, 2557 yards, 23 TD, 2 INT

I believe Gus Bradley has the skills to be a good head coach in the NFL, but there is just so little talent on this roster. What little he had on offense is gone now that Justin Blackmon and Luke Joeckel is out for the year, and Eugene Monroe was traded away. The Jaguars have a realistic shot at 0-16.  The Jaguars decided to draft other positions with an eye on 2014.  Bridgewater is not quite in the Andrew Luck class of prospect, but he is still very good. He is smart and a team leader, and is always in control of his offense. With a premium on quarterback play these days, Bridgewater has a pretty good chance to go first overall. He is more of a classic, drop back passer that does not use his legs unless absolutely necessary. What hurts Bridgewater more then anything is the fact that the Cardinals just do not face great competition this year. He will battle with Marcus Mariota to be the first quarterback selected in April.

-----

3. Minnesota Vikings (1-7)
DE Jadeveon Clowney, Jr, South Carolina
6'6, 274 lbs
Hometown: Rock Hill, SC
2013 Stats: 28 tackles, 2 sacks

Adrian Peterson did it all last year, carrying the Vikings to the playoffs. He has not been able to do it alone this season, and Minnesota's lack of talent and poor coaching is apparent. Jadeveon Clowney has not had a fantastic junior season but I do not think that will matter a bit once he tears up the scouting combine. He has everything you look for in a three down defensive end. Some might worry about Clowney's effort issues this year. I would not worry too much. He has been banged up, and I think Marcus Lattimore is always in the back of his mind. You would love to see every college player go 110% at all times, but he has a career to think about. I live in Columbia and have watched every Gamecock game. Every team has schemed to take him out of the game. Clowney impacts every game and I definitely think he will become a pro bowl defensive end, and be a fine replacement for free agent to be Jared Allen.

-----

4. Pittsburgh Steelers (2-6)
OLB Anthony Barr, Sr, UCLA
6'4, 248 lbs
Hometown: San Pedro, CA
2013 Stats: 44 tackles, 5 sacks

Pittsburgh was so good for so long, but all those years of drafting in the 20's has finally taken it's toll. The Steelers just do not have the talent to compete, and need to go best player available here. This is Barr's second year on defense after being recruited as a fullback, and the results could not have been better. The talent and speed is evident as he chases down ball carriers and gets to the quarterback. There are several teams that would choose Barr over the more heralded Jadevon Clowney. He should thrive at any linebacker position on Pittsburgh's 3-4, but would fit best on the outside, where Lamarr Woodley has completely forgotten how to get to the quarterback and Jarvis Jones has not shown that he is ready to be a starter.

-----

5. Atlanta Falcons (2-6)
OT Jake Matthews, Sr, Texas A&M
6'5, 305 lbs
Hometown: Missouri City, TX

Atlanta could really use a difference maker on defense, but Jake Matthews is the best prospect available here and the Falcons simply need talent everywhere. Matthews would be a huge upgrade over Jeremy Trueblood on the right side. Matthews has made a very good transition to left tackle taking over for Luke Joeckel, and has protected Johnny Manziel pretty well as the Aggies run up the scoreboard on a weekly basis. Matt Ryan is falling apart thanks to a leaky offensive line and injuries to nearly all his weapons. Matthews would help get Matty Ice back on track.

-----
6. Houston Texans (2-6)
QB Johnny Manziel, So, Texas A&M
6'1, 210 lbs
Hometown: Kerrville, TX
2013 Stats: 200-276, 2867 yards, 26 TD, 8 INT
564 rushing yards, 8 TD

If Houston's season was on life support, TY Hilton and the Colts pulled the plug. Houston will see what they have with Case Keenum, and at the worst they have a solid backup, but he should definitely not keep Houston from drafting a potential franchise guy in the first round. Johnny Manziel is the center of the college football world for good and for bad. He is defending his Heisman Trophy quite well, and is gaining plenty of haters for his silly on the field antics. I personally think they are being blown way out of proportion. He isn't a trouble maker off the field, and he should grow up and become a better leader. He will be an exciting pro and it will be interesting to see if he can succeed in the NFL. He is worth a first round draft choice, because he is a strong thrower and a good runner, even if he is a bit undersized and is a gunslinger who throws too many interceptions. Some people compare him to Tim Tebow but that is completely unfair to Manziel. He can throw it. Manziel, a Texas native, would bring a lot of excitement to the Hosuton franchise.

-----
7. New York Giants (2-6)
LB Khalil Mack, Sr, Buffalo
6'3, 248 lbs
Hometown: Fort Pierce, FL
2013 Stats: 54 tackles, 7 sacks, 3 INT,2 TD

Khalil Mack put his name on the national map after a dominating Week 1 performance against Ohio State. People may have forgotten about him since then but he has not slowed up a bit. There is not a more productive defender in college football.  Mack was a lightly recruited Florida linebacker, who's only scholarship offer came from Buffalo. Mack plays for a mid major school, but that same conference produced the top overall draft choice in 2013. Mack has some off the field baggage, but on the field, he is an all around talent who can play linebacker in any scheme. He will help bring some swagger and pass rush back to a New York defense that has fallen apart and lost it's identity in recent seasons.

-----
8. Buffalo Bills (3-6)
WR Sammy Watkins, Jr, Clemson
6'1, 205 lbs
Hometown: Fort Myers, FL
2013 Stats: 66 rec, 982 yards, 7 TD

The Bills just cannot catch a break. They finally add some talent to the offense and key contributors EJ Manuel and CJ Spiller suffer through injury plagued seasons, really stunting the development of both youngsters. The story of the Buffalo Bills. The defense is very solid, so they should focus on adding talent to the offensive side of the ball. Sammy Watkins is my favorite receiver in this class and is actually a nice bargain at this point in the draft. He has put his sophomore slump behind him, and has been one of the most explosive wideouts in college football. Watkins has 96, 91, 77, 64 and 48 yard touchdown receptions this year. He would help form a nice receiver trio with Stevie Johnson and Robert Woods.

-----
9. St. Louis Rams (3-6)
S Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, Jr, Alabama
6'1, 208 lbs
Hometown: Orlando, FL
2013 Stats: 31 tackles, 1 INT

Hasean Clinton-Dix (otherwise known as the very mature and intimidating name Ha Ha) is the next stud in a long line of great Alabama safeties. He is a solid tackler but excels in coverage, with the ball hawking skills of a cornerback. He was suspended for a minor infraction and had 5 tackles and an interception his first game back. Alabama's secondary is an NFL assembly line, and Clinton-Dix should be a high first round pick in April. This may be a bit high for Clinton-Dix, but he is exactly what the Rams need, and with two first round picks, they can afford the slight reach.

-----
10. Baltimore Ravens (3-6)
OT Taylor Lewan, Sr, Michigan
6'8, 308 lbs
Hometown: Cave Creek, AZ

The Ravens lost so much following their Super Bowl win, and it looks like it has been just too much to overcome. The complete lack of a running game is very puzzling, and much of the blame has to be placed on the offensive line. Bryant McKinnie was dealt and Eugene Monroe was acquired. If Baltimore has a chance to further upgrade their offensive line during the draft, they might take that route. Taylor Lewan is a bit tall and stiff, and is not the best athlete, but he is a solid technician with a ton of experience. He would have been a first round pick had he declared as a junior, and with the premium placed on passing, he could go in the top ten.

-----
11. St. Louis Rams (3-6)
(from Washington Redskins)
OT Cyrus Kouandjio, Jr, Alabama
6'6, 310 lbs
Hometown: Hyattsville, MD

Jake Long has done a decent job on the left side, and Joseph Barksdale has done an admirable job filling in for the always injured Rodger Saffold on the right side. I doubt Barksdale is a long term option on the outside, however. Cyrus Kouandjio is a mauler in the run game and was good enough to move 2013 NFL Draft Picks DJ Fluker and Barrett Jones off the position. He has work to do as a pass protector though, and may play on the right side or even move to guard long term. He has had an up and down 2013 season, but the top recruit has played well for a 21 year old.

-----
12. Oakland Raiders (3-5)
WR Mike Evans, So, Texas A&M
6'5, 225 lbs
Hometown: Galveston, TX
2013 Stats: 52 rec, 1147 yards, 12 TD

The Raiders have done a great job staying competitive in most of their games, but Oakland is still a very long way from fielding a playoff caliber roster. Oakland just needs to go best player available for the next several drafts. Mike Evans has drawn plenty of Vincent Jackson comparisons thanks to his physical 6'5 frame and explosive ability. He could provide an H-Back/tight end/wide receiver role who moves all around the field and exploits matchups for big plays. He is used to playing with a mobile quarterback and would be a very good safety valve for Terrell Pryor.

-----
13. Philadelphia Eagles (4-5)
CB Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, Jr, Oregon
5'10, 190 lbs
Hometown: Chino Hills, CA
2013 Stats: 41 tackles, 2 INT

The Eagles have looked so good at times, but the worst team in the NFL other times. Philadelphia has several glaring holes on defense, but none as big as the secondary. I think Ifo Ekpre-Olomu is the best and most ready cornerback in this class. Oregon often jumps out to huge leads, meaning their opponents throw the ball a ton, and Ekpre-Olomu has routinely shut down his side of the field. He is a very good tackler and has notched a couple of interceptions this year. Chip Kelly recruited Ekpre-Olomu, of course, and will know how to get the best out of him.

-----
14. Cleveland Browns (4-5)
WR Marqise Lee, Jr, USC
6'0, 195 lbs
Hometown: Inglewood, CA
2013 Stats: 32 rec, 403 yards, 1 TD

There is a lot to like about Josh Gordon on the field, but he is one strike away from possibly never playing football again. Couple that with Greg Little's constant drops, and wide receiver is a major need in Cleveland. Thanks to coaching turmoil, shoddy quarterback play, injuries and drops, Marqise Lee has suffered through a miserable junior season. He is still a solid first round prospect thanks to solid route running and great speed. His first two years cannot be ignored. He hauled in nearly 200 passes for almost 3000 yards and 25 touchdowns. If Lee can make it through this season, his stock should rise back up during workouts.

-----
15. Miami Dolphins (4-4)
OT Antonio Richardson, Jr, Tennessee
6'6, 327 lbs
Hometown: Nashville, TN

During the off season, General Manager Jeff Ireland made it rain all over the linebacking unit, but failed to touch a troubling offensive line. The result is franchise quarterback Ryan Tannehill is on pace to be sacked 6,947 times this season. He has done a tremendous job considering he has the worst starting tackle duo in the league blocking for him. Ireland desperately traded for Bryant McKinnie, but he will not be a solution. Not to mention the recent drama that has cost Miami 2/5th of it's starting offensive line. Antonio Richardson has been up and down this year as the Tennessee Volunteers have faced an absolutely blistering schedule, but he has prototypical size and strength to man the left side of an offensive line. Once the draft rolls around, do not be surprised if he is a top ten pick.

-----
16. Tennessee Titans (4-4)
TE Eric Ebron, Jr, North Carolina
6'4, 245 lbs
Hometown: Greensboro, NC
2013 Stats: 31 rec, 352 yards, 3 TD

The Titans have been committed to improving the offense, spending free agent dollars and premium draft picks on that side of the ball. I think that trend will continue this draft. Kenny Britt has completely fallen apart since suffering a serious injury and cannot be counted on. With his demise and the departure of Jared Cook, the Titans are having to rely on smaller receivers Nate Washington and Kendall Wright to catch passes. Eric Ebron has come on strong this season, and has the strength and size to cause serious mismatches in the passing game.

-----

17. Arizona Cardinals (4-4)
OLB Vic Beasley, Jr, Clemson
6'3, 235 lbs
Hometown: Adairsville, GA
2013 Stats: 27 tackles, 10 sacks

The Cardinals are very solid on defense, but one thing they lack is a young pass rusher. Vic Beasley has come out of nowhere and is one of the best sack artists in college football. He has been playing defensive end for Clemson but will have to learn how to play linebacker because his 235 pound frame will not hold up very well otherwise. He is a bit of a one year wonder but is squarely in the first round conversation, because there simply are not as many dynamic pass rushers in this class.

-----

18. San Diego Chargers (4-4)
CB Loucheiz Purifoy, Jr, Florida
6'0, 190 lbs
Hometown: Pensacola, FL
2013 Stats: 17 tackles, 1 INT, 2 sacks

Philip Rivers is having a very good year, and the Chargers are playing over expectations so far. The roster still has plenty of holes and the Chargers could just go best available player other then defensive line here. Loucheiz Purifoy is a part of what might be the best secondary in college football. He has been picked on more then other top cornerbacks, but has held his own as a talented junior who is still learning the position. Against Arkansas, his talent was in full display, as he brought a pick back to the house and even registered a sack. He might start his career a bit down the depth chart, but eventually his talent should push him into a Chargers starting lineup that desperately needs help on the back of the defense. Purifoy is an electric kick returner as well. Once the combines roll around do not be surprised to see him in the top ten.

-----
19. Green Bay Packers (5-3)
DT/DE Stephon Tuitt, Jr, Notre Dame
6'7, 322 lbs
Hometown: Monroe, GA
2013 Stats: 34 tackles, 5 sacks, 1 INT

Stephon Tuitt was one of the most productive defensive players in college as a sophomore last year. His play fell off earlier in the year, when he seemed slow and lethargic as he worked his way back from an injury. Tuitt has looked much better in recent weeks, though. At his best, he is a huge, athletic disruptive tackle who can get after the quarterback. He has what it takes to play end in a 3-4 or tackle in a 4-3, but in Green Bay will man one side of the defensive line. He is more than just a run stuffer, he could get over 10 sacks a season during his prime.

-----
20. Chicago Bears (5-3)
LB CJ Mosley, Sr, Alabama
6'3, 232 lbs
Hometown: Theodore, AL
2013 Stats: 59 tackles

The Bears defense held together to start the season, but injuries have crippled this once proud unit. Several long time mainstays are nearing the end of their careers and replacements will need to be drafted. Brian Ulracher has already retired, and guys like Lance Briggs, Charles Tillman and Julius Peppers are on the wrong side of 30. Mosley is an ultra productive classic 4-3 linebacker that shows great leadership and instincts. He has top ten talent in this draft, but linebackers who cannot rush the quarterback often fall to the latter half of the first round. Mosley's future will be on the weak side, where 32 year old Briggs has one more year remaining on his contract.

-----

21. New York Jets (5-4)
OLB Trent Murphy, Sr, Stanford
6'6, 261 lbs
Hometown: Phoenix, AZ
2013 Stats: 33 tackles, 9.5 sacks

The Jets would love to find some offensive help, but there is just not a skill player worth this selection. So they continue to fortify one of the best young front seven's in football. Trent Murphy is not the most athletic player in the world, but he is a very hard worker and relentlessly goes after the quarterback. He will have to overcome a lack of talent, but should make it as a strong edge rusher in the NFL.

-----
22. Dallas Cowboys (5-4)
DT Ra'Shede Hageman, Sr, Minnesota
6'6, 311 lbs
Hometown: Minneapolis, MN
2013 Stats: 27 tackles, 2 sack, 1 INT

Jerry Jones has never been afraid to take a player with some red flags and question marks. During the draft, ESPN is going to eat up Hageman's story as a kid who bounced from foster home to foster home and has had some off the field troubles. On the field, he passes the eyeball test and could shoot up the boards with a great combine. Interior lineman who are athletic and can get to the quarterback do not often last long on draft day.

-----
23. Detroit Lions (5-3)
DT Timmy Jernigan, Jr, Florida State
6'2, 292 lbs
Hometown: Lake City, FL
2013 Stats: 25 tackles, 2 sacks

The Lions have many more pressing needs then another defensive lineman, but Detroit has always gone with the best player available approach. Timmy Jernigan's stats are not eye popping, but he was a huge reason that Tajh Boyd looked so pedestrian when Florida State went up and destroyed Clemson. He is very athletic and has the ability to be a strong pass rusher at the next level. Jernigan is tremendous value here and will help push and perhaps supplant the disappointing Nick Fairley at tackle, and play some end in passing downs as well.

-----

24. Cincinnati Bengals (6-3)
CB Jason Verrett, Sr, TCU
5'10, 176 lbs
Hometown: Fairfield, CA
2013 Stats: 34 tackles, 2 INT, 1 sack

The Bengals are a pretty deep, young team, but a franchise that does not often resign it's big players to contract extensions, Cincinnati always needs young guys ready to step in and take over. The Bengals could use youth in the secondary, with the ancient Terrence Newman and Adam Jones holding down the cornerback spots. Verrett leads a very strong group of senior cornerbacks. He has a ton of experience, and is above average in both pass coverage and tackling. The only thing holding him back is a lack of size, but he should be a late first, early second round pick.

-----

25. Carolina Panthers (5-3)
WR Allen Robinson, Jr, Penn State
6'3, 210 lbs
Hometown: Southfield, MI
2013 Stats: 66 rec, 1043 yards, 6 TD

Cam Newton has struggled somewhat as a passer this year. Part of that could be that Rob Chudzinski moved on, but it also does not help that he only has Steve Smith and Greg Olson to throw to. The Panthers have tried to draft number two wide receivers, but guys like Dwayne Jerrett, Brandon Lafell and Armanti Edwards just have not panned out. Penn State has been in the news for all the wrong reasons the past couple of years, but Allen Robinson has really stepped up to be one of the best wideouts in the nation. He had three games in October with at least 11 receptions and 163 yards. Robinson is not a blazer but he uses his big 6'3 frame to go up and snatch the ball out of the air. Like several Penn State receivers before him, he will be more of a possession guy at the next level, and will hope to give Cam Newton a reliable target in Carolina.

-----

26. Cleveland Browns (4-5)
(from Indianapolis Colts)
QB Derek Carr, Sr, Fresno State
6'3, 218 lbs
Hometown: Bakersfield, CA
2013 Stats: 290-419, 3061 yards, 28 TD, 4 INT

The Browns are a very respectable 4-5 on the season. That is impressive considering the quarterback situation has tried to torpedo this entire team. Brandon Weeden is 0-4 as a starter and has shown what everyone in the NFL Draft community other then Mike Holmgren already knew; he was a massive reach in the first round. Barring injury to Jason Campbell (a serious probability), Weeden has thrown his last pass for the Browns. Eleven years ago David Carr went first overall. A lack of coaching and a terrible offensive line was his undoing. Now his little brother is putting up some astonishing numbers for the very same Fresno State squad. He has thrown the ball at least 47 times in every game but one, and, oh yeah, the Bulldogs are undefeated. Carr is a gunslinger with some sloppy footwork who needs to land in the right situation, but if he can gain coaching from Rob Chudzinski and Norv Turner, two of the best quarterback teachers in the NFL, he could excel. Do not be surprised if Carr is a top ten pick in April.

-----

27. San Francisco 49ers (6-2)
DE/DT Anthony Johnson, Jr, LSU
6'3, 294 lbs
Hometown: New Orleans, LA
2013 Stats: 27 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 INT

The 49ers are a pretty deep team but there are several aging players, especially on defense. Anthony Johnson would be a good pick who could provide depth behind ends Ray McDonald and Justin Smith, who both have quite a few miles on those tires. Like plenty of other LSU defensive lineman, Johnson hasn't quite dominated at the college level but has shown some tremendous flashes. He has three sacks in the past four games and could become a solid pass rushing end in the 49ers 3-4 scheme.

-----

28. New England Patriots (6-2)
TE Austin Seferian-Jenkins, Jr, Washington
6'6, 276 lbs
Hometown: Fox Island, WA
2013 Stats: 20 rec, 244 yards, 4 TD

The Patriots are the hardest team in the NFL to mock, so I just throw all needs out the window and go with the best player available that most people would not mock to New England. Austin Seferian-Jenkins passes the eyeball test as a top ten pick. He is a very solid 6'6, 270 lbs. He was a former member of the Washington basketball team. An off season DUI arrest followed by an alarming lack of production has caused his stock to slip. I still see him as a likely late first rounder. His sophomore season was spectacular (69 rec, 852 yards, 7 TD) and he is a very good blocker, meaning he will be able to stay in for all downs. Tom Brady needs as many guys as he can have to throw to, and Seferian-Jenkins will allow Bill Belichick to bring back his two tight end sets.

-----

29. New Orleans Saints (6-2)
DE/OLB Chris Smith, Sr, Arkansas
6'3, 251 lbs
Hometown: Mount Ulla, NC
2013 Stats: 29 tackles, 7 sacks

The Saints defense has played better than anyone could have imagined this year, but the team still needs to add more talent to that side of the ball. Chris Smith has quietly put together a very solid senior season for a bad Arkansas team. He is strong and a very good pass rusher, and could make it as a 3-4 outside linebacker for the Saints. He has had some off the field problems, but the lack of talented pass rushers could push him into the bottom of the first round.

-----

30. Denver Broncos (7-1)
CB Bradley Roby, Jr, Ohio State
5'11, 192 lbs
Hometown: Suwanee, GA
2013 Stats: 38 tackles, 2 INT

The Broncos are Super Bowl contenders, but it is certainly not because of the defense. Denver is giving up almost as many points as it scores, and opposing quarterbacks have become a fantasy gold mine. Denver needs to try to fix a secondary that has gotten old and weak in a hurry. Champ Bailey is nearing the end of a Hall of Fame career and there is not much youth ready to take over for him. Bradley Roby is still more athlete then football player at this point, but he is having a good season for the Buckeyes and could wind up being the first cornerback taken in April. He has 4.30 wheels and is a hard hitter who can make the big play as well.

-----

31. Seattle Seahawks (8-1)
OT Cameron Erving, Jr, Florida State
6'6, 320 lbs
Hometown: Moultrie, GA

The Seahawks have one of the deepest rosters in the NFL but the offensive line has been in a state of flux. Russell Okung has been unable to stay healthy, and even when he is able to play, the right side of the line is troublesome. Erving is a definite project but has done a good job of protecting Jameis Winston, and could be a high first round pick if he opts to return for his senior season. Even if he declares as a junior, he could be a mid to late first round pick.

-----
32. Kansas City Chiefs (9-0)
QB Tajh Boyd, Sr, Clemson
6'1, 225 lbs
Hometown: Hampton, VA
2013 Stats: 140-222, 1939 yards, 16 TD, 4 INT, 5 rushing TD

Alex Smith has dinked and dunked his way to a 9-0 start this year. The Chiefs are playing some very good football, but I have to think Andy Reid would love to find a young signal caller to groom behind Smith. Tajh Boyd has not quite had the season I hoped he would, and looks like a fringe first rounder right now. He is a good leader with a nice arm who can run when needed, but he has made some puzzling decisions this past few weeks. Couple that with his below average size, and he is not a top ten pick. He reminds me a bit of Donovan McNabb, and Reid could develop him into a future starter. Without a second round pick, this is when the Chiefs would have to pounce.

Favorite Draft so Far for my Browns! Go Browns!
